We know that anxiety and fear about visiting the dentist keeps many people from seeking the dental care they need and want. That’s why we make our patients’ experiences as stress-free and relaxing as possible through oral conscious sedation dentistry and other comfort amenities. In addition to relieving anxiety, sedation can also make it possible for our patients to undergo multiple procedures in just one visit. Offering sedation dentistry at our practice is just another way we help make dental care as comfortable and stress-free as possible for our patients.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation allows our patients to receive the dental care they need and want while in a state of complete relaxation. Sedation dentistry is especially beneficial for patients who have:
- High anxiety or fear about visiting the dentist
- Complex dental problems
- Difficulty getting numb
- An above normal gag reflex
Dr. Vollenweider finds that sedation dentistry is an excellent option for completing multiple procedures (which would normally take several visits) in just one visit, such as with a smile makeover. Rather than spending multiple appointments doing complex cases in small steps, often many steps can be combined into one pleasant visit while sedated. Generally there is less discomfort afterwards and quite often patients have not memory whatsoever of the procedures..
Oral Conscious Sedation
Dr. Vollenweider offers the oral method of conscious sedation dentistry. The night before your visit to our LaGrange office, you will take an oral sedative in the form of a small pill which helps you feel relaxed. About an hour before your actual appoint you will take another small pill which will, by the time your procedure begins, have you even more relaxed, but remain conscious so that you can respond to questions and requests from Dr. Vollenweider and our team. The oral sedative puts you in a sleep-like state in which you will be unable to feel pain and anxiety and you will emerge from treatment with little or no memory of the details.
How Does the Oral Conscious Sedation Process Work?
Step One: Schedule your appointment. Schedule an appointment at our practice to discuss oral conscious sedation with Dr. Vollenweider and our staff. This first step can be difficult for patients with dental anxiety, so our friendly staff will make it as easy as possible.
Step Two: Attend your welcoming visit. During your welcoming visit, we will gather important information about your health, and we will discuss with you your goals and desires for treatment. We may take X-rays and examine your teeth and gums. We are careful to consider your level of anxiety even for these procedures and will make this visit as easy as possible. Dr. Vollenweider will also help you determine if oral conscious sedation dentistry is right for you. We want you to know that you can rest assured we will help make your first visit with us as comfortable as possible.
Step Three: Prepare for your treatment. Once you have been evaluated and cleared for treatment, we will give you a sedative medication to take the night before your sedation dentistry visit at our office. This sedative will help insure that you get a full night’s sleep so that you wake up relaxed and ready for your treatment.
Step Four: Treatment with sedation dentistry. On the day of your visit, you will need to have a companion bring you to our office. We will give you medications to help you feel completely relaxed. During your treatment, our experienced team will monitor you to ensure you remain completely comfortable.
Step Five: Recover from your treatment. After your appointment, you will return home with your scheduled treatment completed and one day what you have always wanted, your new smile. Your companion will take you home and care for you until you’ve completely recovered from sedation.
Step Six: Smile with confidence. During the next day, most patients feel no residual effects or discomfort from the sedation dentistry visit. You can be free to smile with confidence with your new, dazzling smile.

What Is Sedation Dentistry Like?
Time Will Pass Quickly: The medications used for sedation dentistry have an amnesic effect, so you will emerge from treatment with little or no memory of the smells, sounds, or sights of your visit. With sedation dentistry, you will be surprised at how much we can accomplish in a single visit while you remain relaxed and comfortable.
Recovery is Relaxing: You may feel a little unsteady on your feet after your treatment with sedation dentistry, so your companion will need to take you home and stay with you until you’ve recovered from the sedative medications. Many patients report that they got some of the best sleep they have ever had following their sedation dentistry visit. You will feel relaxed as you recover on the day of your treatment, and you will likely feel fantastic the next day.
Now You Can Comfortably Achieve the Youthful Smile You’ve Always Wanted: Whether you need broken or decayed teeth repaired, missing teeth replaced, or yellow teeth whitened, with sedation dentistry, you can regain your dental health and enhance your smile while remaining completely comfortable.
